病気や怪我、不登校などで人生のレールを外れたかもと感じる方はネットの普及によって多くなっているかも知れません。僕自身も小学校5年の時に3ヶ月以上入院して、全く勉強もしていませんでした。退院後は、勉強が遅れたという焦りは全くなく、自由になれた喜びの方が大きかったです。というのも就寝時間も食べたいものも自由に決められ開放的な気分になれました。
運良く病気のハンデなど全く影響もなく、22歳でカリフォルニア州立大学を卒業し、シリコンバレーで働き始めましたが、ITバブル崩壊と同時に無職になりました。アメリカの大学は人種や年齢の異なった生徒がたくさんいるので、レールを意識することが全くと言っていいほどありませんでした。
アップルの創業者スティーブ ジョブズは17歳でリード大学に入学し、半年間通ったが、興味のない必修科目を履修することを嫌がり、「両親が一生をかけて貯めた学費を意味のない教育に使うのに罪悪感を抱いた」ために中退したそうです。
